Mayor urges Hamiltonians to participate in Power Pledge initiative
July 27, 2010

Take the Power Pledge today! Power Pledge is an energy conservation awareness initiative developed by the Ontario Power Authority and co-sponsored by WWF Canada. Take the Power Pledge right now at www.powerpledge.ca and commit to taking simple conservation actions that can save you hundreds of dollars a year and help our environment. Help Hamilton reach our goal of 10,000 pledges.

Energy conservation is a shared responsibility. Here are some measures we can all implement immediately at work and at home everyday:

At Work:
• Turn off PCs and monitors when not in use or not needed. • Always remember to lock your computer (using the ctrl+alt+del keys & selecting "Lock Computer") when temporarily leaving your work area, then power off the monitor. When leaving for the day, you should always shutdown your workstation & power off the monitor

• Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, and "half-dim" lights in occupied rooms.

• Send documents via email instead of fax.

• Keep draperies and shades drawn to reduce any additional air conditioner & fan energy consumption.

• For cell phone users, charge your phone using a car adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, instead of using the charger that plugs into a wall outlet. • Use rotating doors. If there's a choice in your building, use rotating doors instead of standard hinged or sliding doors. They allow less cool air to escape.

• Take the stairs; instead of the elevator. You'll save energy and get a little exercise to boot. At Home:

• If possible, turn off air conditioners between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

• Turn off lights, computers, sound systems and TVs when not in use.

• Replace incandescent bulbs with CFL lights.

• Barbecue instead of using the stove or oven.

• Dry laundry outdoors.

• Combat ‘Phantom Power’ - Phantom power is the electricity used by home electronics and appliances even when they are shut off. This is a wasteful drain on our electricity supply so consider using power bars with integrated timers or auto-shutoff features to efficiently manage phantom power.
