Mayor's Priorities for the NEXT Hamilton:
1. Responsible Government
The people of Hamilton deserve good municipal government made up of committed City staff and hardworking elected representatives who can work together effectively through collaboration, cooperation, and consensus.
Integrity Commissioner: Openness and transparency are the keys to accountability. We have established an Accountability and Integrity sub-committee that focuses on such issues as the Code of Conduct, a lobby registry, and campaign financing. As promised in my platform, the City of Hamilton has established an Integrity Commissioner office and we will be appointing a retired justice to the position.
Establishing a Vision for the City of Hamilton: A strategic planning process brought together City Council and Senior City staff to develop a new vision to guide our efforts as we move forward.
City Vision: To be the best place in Canada to raise a child, promote innovation, engage citizens and provide diverse economic opportunities.
Priority Setting and Fairness to Hamilton: Establishing and promoting Hamilton’s priorities is an important part of making sure Hamilton can form the necessary partnerships to effectively achieve its goals. We are creating a Hamilton Priorities document which outlines our needs to both the federal and provincial governments. In addition, the Fairness to Hamilton sub-committee will continue to move those priorities forward while ensuring our community gets its fair share of funding from upper levels of government.
Municipal Budget Management: We are streamlining the budget process taken to make sure the city’s finances are managed responsibly and effectively. We are making every effort to keep property taxes manageable and making sound investments to stimulate our local economy while maintaining our quality of life.
Community Councils: The people of Hamilton need a strong voice at the table. Thanks to the Community Council Taskforce established when I took office, many options to increase citizen participation have been explored. In May 2008, City Council approved the conclusions of the Taskforce report giving many areas the option to create Community Councils.
