Invitation to "Bring the NHL to Hamilton Rally "

Despite reports to the contrary, Mr. Balsillie’s dream to bring a seventh NHL to Canada, specifically Hamilton, is still alive.

On Friday, June 19th, 2009 at 12:00pm we will be having the “Bring the NHL to Hamilton Rally” on the Jackson Square Rooftop in downtown Hamilton.  The event is sponsored by the City of Hamilton, First Ontario Credit Union, Home Hardware, Labatt, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, The Hamilton Spectator and other local sponsors.

Among the many special guests and entertainers, the rally will feature MC “Red Green” (actor/comedian Steve Smith), Hamilton’s own John Ellison singing the Grand Funk Railroad hit “Some Kinda Wonderful” and the band “GMO” singing their “Make It Seven” theme song.

Hamilton set to spend $184 million in infrastructure stimulus dollars

I am pleased to announce that Hamilton received $122 million from the Federal and Provincial Governments in infrastructure stimulus dollars.   Along with the Municipal contribution, we will be spending a total of $184 million.  The money will go to a variety of projects including water treatment plant upgrades and a emergency operations centre and training facility.  We believe that by investing in our Water Treatment Plant, green energy projects and recreational facilities, we will ensure Hamilton’s future growth and prosperity.

Council and City staff worked very hard with upper levels of government to provide high quality projects that will create jobs and economic spin-offs in all areas of the city.  It is estimated as a result of these investments, approximately 2000 jobs will be created with an approximate tax revenue of $50M.

We have been ready to get our shovels in the ground for months and this announcement means construction can now begin.

23rd Annual City of Hamilton Sport Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Thanks to dedicated sports volunteers, thousands of children and youth are able to enjoy team sports such as baseball, soccer, hockey and many more.

On June 17th, the City will be recognizing the commitment of hundreds of coaches and officials to amateur sports in our City.  A thousand people representing over 100 organizations will gather at the Hamilton Convention Centre where 25 award recipients will be recognized, including Sports Volunteer of the year and Hamilton’s top coach and official for 2009.

Thousands of Hamilton children and youth get to play baseball, soccer, hockey and over forty team sports because of the time, and skills of our dedicated sport volunteers.

Community sport volunteers engage our young citizens, provide them with great opportunities to play and help make Hamilton the best place in Canada to raise a child.

Graffiti is a Crime

The City of Hamilton has made graffiti a top priority and we are pleased to report that our Graffiti Working Group has developed a more coordinated, centralized graffiti reporting and tracking system so that we can address this City-wide problem in a more effective way.

We are already working closely with numerous partners such as the Police, Clean City Liaison Committee, community groups, and other organizations and are expanding our efforts to work with the BIAs.

Call 911 to report graffiti in progress because Graffiti is a Crime and the police will respond.  To report existing graffiti call 905-546-CITY (2489).

Hamilton Signs Smog Summit Declaration

On June 3rd, the City of Hamilton joined neighbouring communities and signed on to the Smog Summit declaration for the first time.  Air quality crosses political jurisdictions and it is vitally important that we work together, share our goals and experience, and take actions to improve our air and protect our climate.

For our part, the City has been reducing emissions from in own operations:

We’re committed to a 10% decrease of 2005 air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions by 2012, followed by a 20% decrease by 2020.

In 2007, the City of Hamilton established our own Office of Energy Initiatives to fast track energy conservation and the associated environmental improvements. We’re reducing our energy consumption by 3% by 2009, 7.5% by 2012 and 20% by 2020.

Finally, the City of Hamilton has been a leader in Fleet Greening.  Since 2007 there have been over 60 hybrid vehicles introduced into our municipal fleet, as well as 12 hybrid buses with the Hamilton Street Railway.  Our Green Fleet won an E3 fleet silver award as one of Canada’s first Green rated fleets.
