Hamilton takes part in Earth Hour

Mayor Fred Eisenberger led the City of Hamilton in efforts to raise public awareness on how we can all do our part to help save the enivoronment.  Joining cities  around the world, Hamilton participated in Earth Hour on March 29th , at 8 p.m. when businesses, communities and individuals were  challenged to take simple steps  to  help reduce their power consumption.

These simple steps involved very minor changes in our daily routines that can collectively make a difference.  Some examples include businesses turning off lights when offices are empty and people throughout the City of Hamilton electing not to use appliances and turning off unnecessary lighting.

"Earth Hour was a prime opportunity for us to take action to help save our environment," said Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "This initiative is another reminder of our obligations to preserving the planet and will help prompt us to continue our conservation efforts for days and years to come."

During Earth Hour, the City of Hamilton  took the following steps to reduce energy consumption:

  • Turned off all non-essential lights and reduced energy consumption in the City's corporate facilities
  • Reduced power at the City's Water Treatment Plant
  • Shut off decorative tree lighting in Gore Park on King Street from Bay to Queen and on King William Street from James to John

Overall during Earth Hour, the City of Hamilton's facilities consumed 19.92% less electricity (14, 714.4 kwhs) than the same hour on March 22nd (18,376.2 kwhs), and 19.33% less power compared to the same time period on March 15th (18,241.8 kwhs). These facilities represent approximately 70% of all electricity used by facilities throughout the City of Hamilton facilities excluding Social Housing facilities.

Horizon Utilities also reported that energy consumption was down by 12% during Earth Hour as compared to historical usage patterns for the 8-to-9 p.m. at hour on Saturdays throughout the month of March.

What's more encouraging is the 12% decrease in energy consumption compared to what we would normally expect to see on a Saturday night in March. This indicates that people made small changes to reduce their day-to-day energy consumption and may indicate that businesses also participated by turning off all lights and unplugging equipment before leaving work for the weekend. Mayor Eisenberger would like to congratulate the people, businesses, and the City of Hamilton for making the first ever Earth Hour a huge success.
