Bringing Nature Back

Earlier this spring, I introduced the idea of naturalizing the green space along the Lincoln Alexander Parkway (Linc) and the new Red Hill Valley Parkway. Although naturalization of roadways is a relatively new idea to Hamilton, it has been in practice around the globe for years now.

The idea is to plant native species that are low maintenance and do not require pesticides. By using plants native to our area, we can have well-landscaped roadways that require less maintenance and are more resistant to weeds and pests.

At the June meeting of Hamilton City Council, your Council approved the establishment of a pilot naturalization project to test the idea. The pilot project will enable the City to determine how different native species used as roadside vegetation will survive with no watering, fertilizer, or weeding. Ultimately, the results of the pilot could determine whether naturalization takes root along the Linc and Red Hill Valley Parkways.

Here is a selection of comments I’ve heard from residents about naturalization:

"It's nice to see Hamilton start to break out of old-fashioned thinking and explore naturalized highway medians"

"I'm all for the naturalization of the medians"

"I hope you will continue your efforts to have this area naturalized - I believe this is an attractive and inexpensive way for caring for these areas."

"I have read about your idea to let these areas naturalize and think that it is a good idea."

"Texas highway officials have been sowing bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and daisies along state roads for more than 50 years ... They have found that it cuts down on the amount of mowing - you don't have to mow once a week - you mow one or two times a season.  You also find that people don't throw as much litter"
