Hamilton focuses on Light Rail Transit

At the end of June, City Council endorsed moving to the next phase of rapid transit planning with a focus on Light Rail Transit (LRT).  This decision came in part due to the overwhelming support received during public consultations across the Greater Hamilton Area during the spring. In fact, of all comments received by the general public, 91 percent believe a rapid transit system is required in Hamilton – 71 percent favour light rail.

"This is about the future," says Mayor Fred Eisenberger, "LRT is the type of transformational and progressive investment that will move our City in the right direction."

The next phase will outline the details on the type of system the City wants to implement. The City will then provide Hamilton’s plans to the Ontario government’s Metrolinx board for consideration and funding as part of their 5-year capital plan. Once submitted to Metrolinx, Mayor Fred will lobby fellow members of the Board to support Hamilton’s plans.
