The City of Hamilton has made great strides over the past number of months in laying a firm foundation that will assist us in achieving our vision to be "the best City in Canada to raise a child, promote innovation, engage citizens and provide diverse economic opportunities." Our vision is being delivered by a community working together through collaboration, cooperation and consensus.
Since the last edition of fredconnect, we have witnessed with much excitement the completion of major infrastructure projects such as the Red Hill Valley Parkway and - thanks to hard work and leadership - we have been given a $60M total commitment from both the federal and provincial governments to allow us to continue with our Randle Reef clean up efforts in Hamilton Harbour.
We have invested in the future of our environment by making the largest transit fleet purchase in our history with the addition of a dozen diesel-electric hybrid buses. And, as a member of the Metrolinx Board of Directors with a seat at the table and a strong voice for Hamilton, I am taking every necessary action to ensure that Hamilton gets its fair share of the $17.5B in provincial transit funding.
Already, $32.8M for transportation infrastructure has been included in the 2008 Ontario Budget. This will include major improvements to the B-Line along the King-Main Corridor and the A-Line along the James-Upper James Corridor with service to Hamilton International Airport. In addition, the most significant transportation infrastructure investment is for the James Street North GO/VIA Station Gateway to Niagara. This development has opened the door to all-day, two-way GO Train service into Hamilton, and will also provide infrastructure for VIA trains to re-establish service to Hamilton - service that has been sorely missed since 1992.
In all, more than $50M has flowed into the City of Hamilton from the Province of Ontario so far this year. Through our hard work in continuing to strengthen our partnerships with upper levels of government, we will reach our goals and achievements together.
The most exciting and personally gratifying achievement came a few months ago in December when Hamilton City Council made the single, largest commitment in recent history to the future prosperity of our city by infusing an additional $1.5M to the existing Planning & Economic Development budget. This investment will bring new staffing resources, new programs, and the Jobs-Prosperity Collaborative that will bring us together in a strong community partnership focused on attracting more business, retaining and growing Hamilton's existing companies, and improving the overall quality of life.
As Mayor of Hamilton, I am confident that our great strides are collectively leading us to an exciting future with continued inner city revitalization, strengthened innovation, and long-term sustainable economic development. I invite you to take some time to read through this edition of fredconnect to get a more in depth perspective of our great achievements and the many events I have enjoyed being a part of.
